AIR21 SUBDUES GINEBRA IN MANDAUE
7 Express in double figures
Saturday, 20 May 2006
MANDAUE City - Air21 made Barangay Ginebra missed all the more Mark Caguioa's absence.
Pounding on a Kings' team that was without its leading scorer, the Express won their shootout with the league's crowd darling, hacking out a big 107-100 win and giving a boost to a sagging quarterfinal bid in the Gran Matador-PBA Philippine Cup.
The Express got 17 points each from brothers Yancy and Ranidel de Ocampo while local hero Stephen Padilla had 15, helping the team win its second straight and moving just a game behind the skidding Kings at 6-9.
Ginebra came into the match at the Mandaue Sports and Cultural Center here minus the 6-foot-1 Caguioa, out for a one-game suspension after incurring two technical fouls in an 88-99 losing cause against the Coca-Cola Tigers Wednesday night.
The hotshot Ginebra shooting guard leads both the league and team in scoring with a 24-point average per game.
Air21 was quick to pounce on the opportunity, outrunning and outgunning Ginebra for the first three quarters.
None was more crucial than the two separate scoring runs made by them in the third period that opened up an 84-69 lead.
Then the Kings made a game out of it.
With Jayjay Helterbrand at the helm, the Kings rallied back and came to as close as 89-83 following with seven minutes to play following a basket by the prolific Ginebra guard.
But what was anticipated by the big weekend crowd as another classic Kings comeback was cut short by a key Ranidel three-pointer, hiking back the Air21 lead to nine.
Without Caguioa to sustain the offense, the Kings never recovered again.
The Kings (6-8) have now lost two in a row despite reactivating big man and reigning Most Valuable Player (MVP) Eric Menk from the injury list. The 6-foot-5 Fil-Am, playing in his second game with the team, finished with 19 markers.
Rookie Mark Macapagal had a team-high 23 points while Helterbrand added 13 for the Kings that continue to play hurt in the absence of injured players Rodney Santos, Romel Adducul and Andy Seigle. (GR)
