LAMPLEY BUZZER-BEATER
WINS IT FOR GINEBRA
Defense also does it for
Kings as SMB silenced in
last 4 minutes
Thursday, 03 November 2005
Sean Lampley made a basket
just before the final buzzer
sounded and Barangay Ginebra
overcame a 10-point deficit
in the last four minutes,
hacking out a nail-biting 74-72
win over defending champion San
Miguel Beer in the San Mig
Coffee-PBA Fiesta Conference
at the Cuneta Astrodome Wednesday
night.
An overflowing crowd in the
Pasay City venue stood witness
as Lampley got away with that
key shot, capping and punctuating
the Kings’ mighty comeback from
a big hole entering the homestretch
as the team sustained their streak
and moved up to fourth place in
the chart with a 5-3 card.
As Lampley released his shot
just after striding past the
foul line against the defending
Nic Belasco, the two teams and
the crowd had to hold their breath
first as the ball played around
the rim before trickling in to
the frenzied celebration of the
Kings and their throngs.
Lampley asked for that play
in a timeout with 13.7 seconds
left to play and dutifully
delivered, providing a climactic
ending in the classic game that
served as the Kings' advanced
birthday gift to coach Siot
Tanquingcen who turns 33 Thursday.
"I didn't do anything special.
Lampley asked for it and he
delivered," said Tanquingcen,
whose team has now won three
straight—all since the return
of Eric Menk.
Lampley actually struggled almost
throughout but converted the shot
that mattered the most as the
Kings handed the Beermen a fifth
loss in six outings.
It was a sorry loss for the
Beermen who returned playing a
solid all-round game after a
pitiful five-point output in the
second quarter and had looked
headed for a win when they enjoyed
a 72-62 lead with time down to four
minutes.
Incidentally, San Miguel had
never scored lower than six
points in a quarter since the
league's inception in 1975.
The Beermen made a great recovery
from that second-quarter slump
only to fade out at the finish
as the team tumbled once again in
the cellar in the company of
sister team Coca-Cola.
San Miguel Beer, which is in
its worst start in a tournament
since the 2003 Reinforced Conference,
went 0-of-6 from the field and
committed one turnover in its bitter
endgame collapse.
Four of the Beermen's five losses
have each been by a margin of two
points, and two of the five were a
result of uncharacteristic scoreless
spells in the endgame.
After Ginebra finally pulled
even at 72-all on a 10-to-nothing
run capped by Lampley himself on a
short stab also against Belasco,
the Beermen had a chance to regain
the lead but Rico Hill muffed a
hurried running jumper.
In the ensuing play, Mark Caguioa
pushed the ball down court and
dropped the ball to Romel Adducul
for a lay-up that went a little
strong.
But Eric Menk grabbed the offensive
rebound, and Tanquingcen quickly
sued for time to map out what
turned out to be a winning play.
With still 13.7 seconds left in
the game, Lampley let the clock
run first, waiting for the right
time to attack in what proved to
be the play of the night.
