CAGUIOA LEADS KINGS TO
REVENGE WIN OVER CABAGNOT,
SLR
Realtors slump to fourth
straight loss even with
new import
Mark Caguioa took the cudgels
for his injured backcourt
partner Jay-Jay Helterbrand,
winning his much-awaited and
much-hyped rematch against
co-Eagle Rock High School
alumnus and Sta. Lucia rookie
Alex Cabagnot Jr. and leading
Barangay Ginebra to a 96-89
drubbing of the Realtors
Sunday night in the San Mig
Coffee-PBA Fiesta Conference
at the Araneta Coliseum.
Caguioa, who only had
eight points, four rebounds
and one assist in the Kings'
first meeting against Sta.
Lucia last Oct. 9 which they
lost 92-88, exploded with a
double-double of 19 points
and 10 rebounds, to lead
Barangay Ginebra to their
second straight win and a
4-3 their win-loss record.
The 2001 Rookie of the Year
also had four assists, three
assists and one shotblock
and was one of many Kings
who held Cabagnot to his
first scoreless stint in
the pros.
"C'mon men, you can't compare
him (Cabagnot) with us.
Look at the score. Hindi man
lang siya lumaban," remarked
Caguioa after the game,
somewhat belittling the
way the media seemed to
have over-hyped the rivalry.
Sean Lampley scored 27 points
and had 10 rebounds as the
Ginebra Kings got back at the
Realtors in a game which
appeared to be turning into
a blowout game but which
turned into a thriller in
the closing minutes as the
Kings, Lampley in particular,
kept on missing free throws.
Ginebra went 11-of-21 from the
line in the fourth quarter
with Lampley going 1-for-7
in the last 2:46.
"We had to work on our free
throw shooting. It's a good
thing we had a pretty good lead,"
said Ginebra coach Siot Tanquingcen
after the Kings' win which handed
Sta. Lucia its fourth straight
defeat in the Magic Xtreme-backed
tournament
After a slow start, the Kings,
who seemed to have not missed
Helterbrand (right hamstring s
train) that much, picked up
their rhythm in the second
quarter as Lampley and Caguioa
begun to warm up. The two
combined for 16 points in the
quarter as GInebra overhauled
a 10-point lead and took the
lead for good 50-46 at half time.
Omar Weaver, who replaced
Leonard White, turned in 28
points and 13 rebounds in his
debut but shot just 10 of 31
from the field, a huge reason
for Sta. Lucia shooting just
39.1% from the floor overall.
Dennis Espino had 17 points
and Paolo Mendoza added 16
for the Realtors, who absorbed
their fourth consecutive defeat
and dropped to 2-4.
The Realtors set the tempo in
the early going and took a
10-point lead twice at 39-29
and 41-31.
But they started to fold by
the time the Kings started
to run, giving away easy
points mostly on defensive
lapses.
The scores:
Barangay Ginebra 96
Lampley 27,
Caguioa 19,
Adducul 11,
Menk 11,
Santos 11,
Salvacion 8,
Ferreria 4,
Echavez 3,
Holper 2,
Sotto 0.
Sta. Lucia 89
Weaver 28,
Espino 17,
Mendoza 16,
Calimag 13,
Tolomia 4,
Duremdes 4,
Aquino 4,
Catli 3,
Cabagnot 0,
Omolon 0,
Sta. Maria 0.
Quarterscores:
22-29, 50-46,
70-62, 96-89.
Gin Kings pin 4th straight loss on SLR
By June Navarro
Inquirer News Service
MARK CAGUIOA got back at
Alex Cabagnot as Barangay
Ginebra streaked past Sta.
Lucia Realty, 96-89,
last night in the San Mig
Coffee-PBA Fiesta Conference
at the oven-hot Araneta
Coliseum in Quezon City.
Caguioa pumped in 19
points and grabbed 10
rebounds as he took the
cudgels for the injured
Jayjay Helterbrand and
sparked the Gin Kings to
their fourth win in seven
games.
"If you're going
to compare me with him
(Cabagnot), he could have
at least put up a decent
fight," said Caguioa.
"But he never did. T
he match-up that people
had been waiting for never
really happened. Just look
at the statistics."
Obviously pressured,
Cabagnot, the No. 2 draft
pick this year, was cold
throughout, ending up
scoreless after going 0
of 4 from the field in
21 minutes.
"We were humiliated the
last time we played (against
each other)," said Caguioa,
who played for Eagle Rock
High School in California,
Cabagnot's alma mater.
"This time, I got even."
Caguioa pointed out that
Cabagnot broke in four years
the scoring record he set
in two.
Helterbrand sat out the
game as he was nursing
a strained right hamstring
he suffered in Ginebra's
victory over Talk 'N Text
last week.
The Big Dome's air-conditioning
system conked out, but Sean
Lampley still came up big, s
coring 27 points and grabbing
10 rebounds.
The Realtors fell to their
fifth loss in seven games.
Kings, Caguioa avenge loss
to Realtors, Cabagnot
By Nelson Beltran
The Philippine Star 10/31/2005
Mark Caguioa redeemed himself
after being outplayed by Alex
Cabagnot in their first meeting,
returning the compliment
last night as Barangay Ginebra
exacted revenge against Sta.
Lucia Realty, 96-89, in the
San Mig Coffee PBA Fiesta Cup
before a huge weekend crowd at
the Araneta Coliseum.
Caguioa made a conscious
effort to get the better
end of his rematch with his
fellow former Eagle Rock HS
player in the United States,
leading the Kings to a second
straight victory and their
fourth in seven games overall
in the Xtreme Magic Sing-backed
tourney.
The 2001 Rookie of the Year
tallied 19 points, 10 rebounds,
four assists and three steals
while the Sta. Lucia freshman
finished with a big fat egg
in scoring although he came up
with five rebounds and three assists.
"I was embarrassed in our
first meeting. We came from
the same school and I know
it would be talked about
in the States. Masyado kaming
pini-pair, eh wala naman
siyang nagawa. Ni-hindi
siya lumaban," said Caguioa.
Cabagnot mocked the defenses
of Caguioa and Jayjay Helterbrand
in the first Sta. Lucia-Ginebra duel,
piling up 16 points, three assists
and two rebounds in leading the
Realtors to a 92-88 victory.
This time, Cabagnot ran into the
stonewall defense of the Kings and
went scoreless on 0-of-4 shooting
from the field.
"Kinausap ko ang mga teammates
ko. Sabi ko huag syang paiskorin,"
said Caguioa.
With Caguioa stepping up his
game, the Kings bucked the
absence of Helterbrand in
dealing the Realtors a fourth
straight loss and their fifth
against two wins.
Sean Lampley, Rommel Adducul,
Eric Menk and Rodney Santos
also finished in double figures
while Helterbrand was sidelined
by a hamstring injury.
The Realtors stayed on a skid
despite unraveling a new import
in Omar Weaver, who debuted in
the league with a double-double
game with 28 points and 13 rebounds.
"It’s always nice to win.
Pero may hindi magandang signs
na nakita sa inilaro namin.
Pwede namin idikdik at ilayo,
pero hindi nagawa. We became
complacent," said Ginebra
coach Siot Tanquingcen.
The Kings enjoyed a 17-point
lead at the onset of the
fourth quarter but did relax
a bit and allow the Realtors
to get back into the game
heading into the finish.
Caguioa himself finished off
the Realtors by canning
in two charities to make it
94-88 with time down to 30 seconds.
Tanquingcen hoped the win
could prime up the Kings for
their match with the San Miguel
Beermen Wednesday.
"San Miguel has come out
of a slump. Siguradong
pahirapan ang laro naming,"
said Tanquingcen
