GIANTS CONTINUE MASTERY OF KINGS ON THE ROAD
Yap, Raymundo endgame heroics lead
Purefoods to victory anew
Saturday, 22 October 2005
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY. – Riding the crest
of back-to-back overtime wins in Manila
the previous weekend, Purefoods Chunkee
ripped Barangay Ginebra, 84-78, Saturday
for a third straight win in the San Mig
Coffee-PBA Fiesta Conference before a
sellout crowd at the Xavier University
gym here.
The Giants stayed on a roll in the
season-opening conference, becoming only
the second team in the tourney to score
three consecutive victories after the
unbeaten league-leader Talk ‘N Text Phone Pals.
Purefoods, which matched their 4-1 win-loss
start in the previous conference, firmed up
its hold of second place behind Talk ‘N Text
as it dealt Barangay Ginebra a third loss
in five outings.
Curiously, the Kings were the best team on
the road last season, piling up 10 wins
against only two defeats. The Hotdogs only
had a 5-6 mark in out-of-town
games last campaign but is responsible for
two of Barangay Ginebra’s last three defeats
dating back to the 2003 season.
Sean Lampley was practically missing in
action as the Kings suffered a second straight
loss following a 72-102 blowout by the
Alaska Aces Wednesday. The 6-foot-6 import,
who averaged 22.2 points in the Kings’ first
four games, struggled for only six points this
time.
Purefoods counterpart Marquin Chandler made
20 points and once again got the needed support
from his local teammates.
James Yap went 2-of-2 from beyond the arc and
finished with 16 points and five rebounds with
Kerby Raymundo adding 11 points and Peter June
Simon and Marc Pingris nine points apiece.
Named co-Players of the Week for the period
October 10 to 16, Yap and Raymundo combined
for six of their team’s final output in the
game, dousing a never-say-die Ginebra rally
which cut the lead down to five in the final
minute.
The Giants took the half at 44-32 and enjoyed
a lead as much as 16 points at 70-54 late in
the third quarter.
Pounding the lethargic game of Lampley,
Purefoods took control throughout the contest.
Barangay Ginebra has continued to struggle
without last year's MVP Eric Menk, who still
hasn't updated his citizenship documents with
the Commissioner's Office. Dating back to the
previous season, the Kings have now lost six
of their last eight games. (NC)
The scores:
Purefoods 84 – Chandler 20, J. Yap 16,
Raymundo 11, Simon 9, Pingris 9, R. Yap 8,
Salvador 8, Castillo 3.
Barangay Ginebra 78 – Caguioa 24, Helterbrand 18,
Macapagal 11, Adducul 9, Holper 8, Lampley 6, Sotto 2.
Quarterscores: 18-12, 44-32, 70-54, 84-78.
