Gin Kings’ Grand Slam dream remains a dream
By Dominic Menor
BARANGAY GINEBRA is without doubt the league’s biggest crowd drawer.
Aside from the team’s charisma and never-say-die attitude, the Kings have
won almost everything there is to win in the league except for one thing —
scoring a Grand Slam.Winning a Grand Slam is the dream of every player
and every coach in this basketball-crazy nation. But that dream will remain as
a dream for the Kings as they suffered a crushing setback at the hands of Red
Bull Barako Saturday.
Coach Siot Tanquincen is of course disappointed. Frustrated and hurt. But he’s
not blaming anyone for that monumental collapse that all but shattered their
bid of scoring a Grand Slam of sort."To be able to work with a special group of
players since last year, it’s something you don’t forget. And to come close to
doing something magical as a Grand Slam, you have to be proud of that," said
Tanquingcen. "It was a great ride. But at the same time it goes to show that you
can’t win them all."
With a 27-point lead in the third quarter last Saturday, Tanquingcen looked to
extend that ride. But Red Bull, the very same team the Kings defeated last year to
win the Fiesta Conference came through with a spell-binding run in the fourth to
turn the game around. And in a snap, Ginebra’s title bid was blown into bits. But
if they will be lucky enough, its failed bid would be part of the league’s history.
But the Kings’ starcrossed fate didn’t wrest solely on their collapse Saturday.
The whole tournament was writing on the wall in itself.
Tanquingcen couldn’t get a multi-dimensional import like what he had last year.
Jay-Jay Helterbrand, a key ingredient in the title run, didn’t suit up for a complete
season for the first time under Tanquingcen’s reign. And Eric Menk, the conference
MVP in Ginebra’s last two championships, continued to be hounded with citizenship
issues.
"But we never made any excuse," Tanquingcen said. "I wanted us to think
that we could do it even though some guys who helped us win before weren’t on
the team. We had to play with the cards we have."
When the finals buzzer sounded, Import Hiram Brown was on the floor bending
over and his shirt over his head. Some of the Ginebra players walked out of the dugout
with towels hanging on their heads, perhaps embarrassed by their defeat.Assistant coach
Binky Favis shook hands with and consoled a few downtrodden supporters.
"There’s nothing to be embarrassed about," Tanquingcen said. "I’ll always be proud of my team. We went down but we went down swinging."
In October, the Kings will be up on the plate again to defend the Philippine Cup.At least now, they’ll have time to do what needs to be done to get back on top.
